Tanakia lanceolata and Pronodularia japanensis (Shizuoka Prefecture RL2020 Critically Endangered (CR))

Tanakia lanceolata

Pronodularia japanensis

The Tanakia lanceolata grows in a river and moves to a canal in the breeding season to lay eggs in Pronodularia japanensis. The Pronodularia japanensis parasitizes in the fins of ricefish and loach at the larval stage, and then, grows as a juvenile spat at the river bottom. In recent years, as the number of Tanakia lanceolata is decreasing due to the decrease in the number of Pronodularia japanensis because of the change to the concrete of waterway and due to the river breaking off by a dam.

In this biotope Tanakia lanceolata and Pronodularia japanensis which inhabit only, within Shizuoka Prefecture, in the Miyakoda River system near the site of Hamamatsu Business Office are preserved.

In the future, we are planning to utilize it as a communication place where everybody can experience grace of Satoyama (Village).

Note 1 biotope:
It means the place where diverse creatures live. In urban areas where development has advanced in recent years, there is almost no natural environment left where wildlife can settle down, so that the establishment of a biotope that provides living space for living creatures by connecting disconnected inhabitation and growth areas is sought.
Note 2 gene bank:
It is a facility for preserving rare fauna and flora.
